New Family

Starting or growing your family is an exciting time, and we’re here to support you through every step. At Leawood Pediatrics, we provide guidance, resources, and compassionate care for expecting parents and newborns. Our goal is to ensure families feel confident and cared for from pregnancy through those important early years.

Expecting Parents

Bringing a new baby into the world comes with many questions. Our team is here to partner with you, offering both medical expertise and a listening ear. We provide prenatal consultations, answer questions about newborn care, and help you prepare for the transition from pregnancy to parenthood.

Nursing Staff

Our nursing team plays an important role in supporting your family at every stage. From answering questions during your first call to providing hands-on care in the office, our nurses are here to guide, educate, and reassure you. Phone nurses are also available during regular office hours to offer timely support when questions arise.

Prenatal Classes

Leawood Pediatrics offers monthly prenatal classes to help expecting parents feel informed and prepared. These physician-led sessions cover an overview of our practice, office policies, and what to expect at the hospital and in the early days of newborn care. Families can tour the office, ask questions, and gain confidence as they prepare for this new chapter.

After Hours Advice

We provide after hours support for families when concerns come up outside of regular office hours. Through our partnership with the Children’s Mercy nurse triage line, you can speak with a trained pediatric nurse who offers guidance, reassurance, and next steps. Whether your child has new symptoms or you need advice, help is always available.

What to Expect at the Hospital

Leawood Pediatrics provides newborn care at Overland Park Regional and AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, where our physicians round daily. Your baby will be seen every 24 hours by the on-call physician for exams, updates, and questions. If needed, care will be transferred to the NICU team. Circumcisions may be performed prior to discharge, with Drs. Allen, Hamm, Loeb, and Speropoulos using the Plastibell technique and Dr. Gatz and Dr. Steele using the Gomco method.

FAQs

After your baby is born, the on-call physician who sees you in the hospital will share your information with our office. We’ll reach out to arrange your first appointment, which we recommend taking place within 1–2 business days after discharge.

Newborns are usually seen in our office 1–2 business days after leaving the hospital. During the first couple of weeks, additional visits may be needed to monitor weight and feeding. Well visits in the first year occur at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months. Vaccines begin with Hepatitis B in the hospital, with the next series starting at 2 months. Because our schedule opens at least six months ahead, we encourage families to plan future visits early.

That’s not a problem. If your baby is born at another area hospital, you can still choose Leawood Pediatrics for follow-up care. Just give us a call after discharge, and we’ll help set up your first appointment.

Yes. Same-day appointments are often available for sick visits. Please call our office as early as possible—phones open at 7:30 am. Well visits should always be scheduled with your child’s primary physician, and many appointments can also be requested through the patient portal.

Yes. Calls made after hours are handled through the Children’s Mercy nurse triage center. A $13 fee from Children’s Mercy will be billed to your account for this service. During the week, our phone nurses are available starting at 7:30 am, so whenever possible we encourage you to call during business hours. Messages left after 3:00 pm may be returned the next business day.
